Moving from Brampton to Austin is a cross-border move of roughly 2,500 to 3,000 km, and once your belongings are loaded, delivery to Austin usually takes five to seven business days. Most of your preparation goes into customs: a valued inventory, the right U.S. forms, and knowing what can't cross the border. Start four to six weeks ahead and work through the steps below in order.
When should you start planning a move from Brampton to Austin?
Start at least four to six weeks before your move date. You need that time to sort your home, build an inventory and gather documents, and a mistake in any of them can hold your shipment at the border. Book earlier if you are moving between May and September, the busiest season for cross-border moves.
Confirm your U.S. status before you book. Your passport and your right to live in the United States (a visa, green card, or work or study authorization) shape which forms you file and whether your goods enter duty-free.
What documents do you need for a cross-border move from Ontario to the USA?
Have these ready before moving day:
- A valid passport for each person moving
- Proof of your right to enter and live in the U.S., and your Form I-94 where required
- CBP Form 3299, the declaration for bringing in used household goods
- A detailed inventory in English with a realistic value for each item
- CBP Form 6059B if you cross the border with any of your goods
- A power of attorney for a U.S. customs broker, if you appoint one
The inventory matters most. U.S. Customs does not accept “household effects” as a description, and a vague list can get your shipment held at the border. List items room by room, number your boxes, and match each box to a line on the list. Customs may also ask for proof that you have owned and used your goods for at least a year.
Check whether your shipment needs a Canadian export declaration. Most personal and household goods don't, but controlled or regulated items still need the right permit. The cross-border moving policy sets out which documents you provide and when.

Who handles customs and duties?
You are the exporter and importer of record, so every declaration is made in your name. G Force reviews your inventory, tells you which documents you need and flags items that need special handling. A licensed U.S. customs broker can file on your behalf, and G Force recommends using one.
Used household goods usually enter duty-free for U.S. citizens, permanent residents and people on approved visas. If you are moving before your immigration is approved, different rules apply, so speak to a customs broker or an immigration lawyer first. Any duties, taxes, brokerage or inspection fees are separate from your moving charges.
What can't you bring across the border to Texas?
Leave these out of the truck, or check the rules before you pack them:
- Fresh fruit, vegetables, plants, seeds and soil
- Perishable food
- Alcohol and tobacco
- Firearms and ammunition
- Prescription or controlled medication
- Products made from protected species, such as ivory and some leathers
- Explosives, flammables and compressed gases
- Cash and jewellery
Carry your medication, cash, jewellery and travel documents with you. Alcohol, tobacco, plants, animals and firearms are not part of a standard move unless agreed in writing, and you arrange any permits they need. If you are bringing more than US$10,000 in currency, you must declare it.
How long does moving from Brampton to Austin take?
Plan for five to seven business days from pickup in Brampton to delivery in Austin. You get a confirmed delivery window when you book, but border processing is outside the mover's control, so treat any date as an estimate. With G Force, the same crew loads your home in Brampton and unloads it in Austin.
If you are flying, you will probably reach Austin before your furniture. Pack a bag with documents, medication, clothes and essentials for about a week. The Ontario to Texas moving page has delivery times for Austin and other Texas cities.
How should you pack for a cross-border move?
Pack with the border inspection in mind. Label every box with a number, its room and its contents, and keep the list in the same order as your inventory. Don't seal restricted items inside boxes of clothes or books.
Professional packing protects your goods over a multi-day trip and keeps the box count accurate. G Force offers packing services for your whole home or selected rooms, with materials, furniture wrapping and disassembly of beds and shelving. You can also pack yourself and book transport only, but the mover is not liable for cartons you pack.
What if your Austin home isn't ready?
Closing dates and lease starts don't always line up with a cross-border move. G Force can hold your belongings in storage in Ontario and deliver them to Austin when your home is ready. Mention any gap between dates when you ask for your quote.
What should you arrange separately?
- Your car: vehicles are not part of the move. Use a licensed auto transport carrier, and check U.S. import rules for your vehicle.
- Insurance: default protection is $0.60 per pound, per article, which is not full replacement value. Declare a higher value in writing before the move, or buy transit insurance for valuable items.
- Payment: the moving balance is due once loading is finished, before your goods are unloaded in Austin.
- Claims: note visible damage on the delivery receipt, and send any claim in writing within seven days of delivery.
