Moving goes smoother when the big decisions are made early. Use this checklist to plan what to book, pack and confirm in the weeks before your move, whether you’re moving across town or from Ontario to another province.

‍

8 weeks before your move

Pick your moving date and request quotes. For local moves within Ontario, book at least 1–2 weeks ahead. For long-distance moves to another province or the USA, allow 3–4 weeks so the route, crew and logistics can be planned.

  • Request a moving quote with an accurate inventory: number of rooms, stairs, elevator access and bulky items
  • Tell your mover about anything over 150 lb, such as safes, pianos, pool tables or treadmills
  • Decide whether you need packing services or storage between homes

Sort and declutter

Go room by room and set aside what you’ll sell, donate or recycle. Fewer items means less packing and less time on moving day, which matters when a move is billed by the hour.

‍

4 weeks before your move

  • Start packing rooms you use least
  • Label every box with its room and contents
  • Book elevator time and loading-zone parking at both addresses if you live in a condo or apartment
  • Check your home or tenant insurance for coverage during the move. Basic mover protection is limited by weight, not by replacement value.

1 week before your move

  • Pack a bag of essentials for the first night
  • Keep cash, jewellery, ID, important documents and medication with you. Don’t pack them in the truck.
  • Confirm your moving date and start time with your mover
  • Need to change the date? Most movers ask for written notice. Check your mover’s rescheduling policy for the deadline.

On moving day

Be at both addresses, or have an authorized adult there, to direct the crew and sign for your belongings. Check your items before the crew leaves and note any visible damage on the delivery receipt.
